This idea of a strong man, a few words holding up a lot of words, also is consistent with i + 1, in that it is giving them a strong foundation of the language so they can then read and acquire some of the more difficult aspects of the language (prepositions,etc). So the i being our daily routine and the +1 being the more difficult concepts, embedded readings, new stuff we add in, trying to push them just enough.
This just struck me: I think Vygotsky would call i + 1 his “zone of proximal development.”
Yes in the sense that it has an emotional component to it, that the student wants to learn and can learn in that safe zone of trust built with the teacher. Nice comparison.
And so if this is true then we need to really watch how we assess. We assess in kindness or we lose any hopes of having motivated students, the +1.
