Comprehension Check Variation

The ten finger hand comprehension checks are not accurate, because many of the kids lie. We use them, of course, when being observed to get the box checked. The observer doesn’t know that the kids are lying and is eager to check the box.

As a variation, do a check as the kids exit the room after a story. Stand by the door and have them show you on their way out how well they understood that day in class. As you stand there, only one arm up ready for the high fives to avoid collisions, smiling broadly and full of obvious pride at what they just did, the kids stride by, victorious.

It’s like two soccer teams congratulating each other as they pass by each other in a line after the game. But in this game there are no losers, just winners. Just watch out for the kids who put a little too much punch in the hand you high five.

After a good story, it’s fun. We’re at team. We high five each other in triumph that we made a good story.

TPRS is a team sport.
