Hey, lay off those Latin profz. I’m sure they have their reasons… 😛
The irony being that when I took Latin in Uni, the prof was great. We didn’t bave to speak/write it– the class was just for reading– and the guy did a fair amount of repeating and focused instruction around small amounts of comprehensible material. “Homo hic ebrius est” was the first thing I remember learning. I have forgotten the rest, but it’s in my head: when I see Latinate words, I understand them.
The prof btw also had a neat research project going on: he was cataloguing the spatial distribution (in terms of distance from their place of origin) of amphorae with reference to time. His idea was that the distribution of alcohol was a pretty good proxy for the overall trade health of an Empire, since wine would have been shipped to places where there were enough– and wealthy enough– men of means or Army guys to make it worthwhile. Neat class.
