Certainly no offense taken here, but I disagree further with the label (more than just the corporate brand being given free advertising by us), given that YouTube limits the method’s potential. Many schools don’t allow YouTube to be accessed on their servers. And, some people will choose to use this with clips of movies they have on VHS or DVD, or with little clips the students themselves videotape, or from some other video archiving website. No doubt YouTube is a powerful source for these videos, but it’s not the totality of them.
And maybe we’ll talk with Hastings and he’ll support us using the term MT…
The person making the video of my class doing this method, Jim Wooldridge (aka Senor Wooly), is interested in the outcome of this discussion and said he will change the name accordingly. But right now he’s using MovieTalk. He won’t want to offend Hastings either I’m fairly certain. Is there a way to share with him from this thread what we have been discussing re the name of the method in question? I’d need permission from the authors of course. Or I can paraphrase anonymously, but that will take me some time and I’d prefer to be doing other things right now. The name Jim decides to use could very well set it in stone, since many teachers visit his site daily. I think he’ll be finishing up the demo within the next couple weeks.

My guess is that when this gets sorted out it will remain MovieTalk. I think the definition will widen out to accommodate what we do.

Jim– great point– we probably shouldn’t name stuff after a corporation. I like movietalk.

a) we use movies– ads, vids, films
b) we talk over them.
Or what about “VideoTalk”? Since “video” encompasses movies, commercials, etc…

Dingo! But should we wait until Michele can get back to us and perhaps Dr. Hastings? The way I see it now is that if Hastings sees what we are doing as in line with his ideas so that there is no discrepancy in his mind, we could stay with MovieTalk bc it is used so widely now anyway. OR if there is a discrepancy we could move to VideoTalk? My gut tells me VideoTalk. It’s really right on point! Elissa you nailed that one!
There is an example right on the MovieTalk website about using short videos, commercials, etc. It is pretty much what we do.

From the description it is clear that we have artistic license, so to speak:

The main point is that you, the teacher, provide spoken input that your students can understand with the aid of an entertaining video. This satisfies the conditions for language acquisition.”
That looks good, jen. That satisfies me. Let’s keep using “MovieTalk,” but we should remember to credit Dr. Hastings every now and then.
Yeah that certainly makes the decision easy, jen. Although Elissa’s VideoTalk is a big time term as well. I may use both.

Yeah, I wasn’t trying to weigh in on one term over another. Both are valid. Just was pointing out that there was an example of the type of work we do with the short vids in addition to the feature length movies that was the original impetus for his work.
