  1. Ben et al –

I am not sure where to post this and I am nearly embarrassed to ask, but why don’t more language teachers use methods like those of Rosetta Stone or Babel and why has TPR not gained more acceptance. In my experience, I can definitely tell you that ALL of my students get the message when I say in Spanish, stand up or sit down and they literally fight me for who gets to receive the command to walk to the door and turn off the light when I show them a video. I even had one student tell me that she was learning more Spanish when I used TPR than before I switched to OWI.

  2. Hey Robert in my own experience TPR would lose its shine after ten minutes. I think it was because the brain craves more contextual information which is what OWI and the creation of images does, and with those images even higher levels of contextualized fun can happen when we move further on from the created image into a story.

Your question about Rosetta is that in my own view and experience the quantity and speed of input is just too much in those programs. The brain needs to be free to absorb new sounds and interpret them for meaning in its own way. Also, when they tell me about somebody I’ve never met at a railroad station in Madrid my mind turns off. I don’t care about that.

So by building community via OWI and the Invisibles and talking at a rate of speed that approximates what Mr. Rogers does we personalize and build a level of community that can’t be achieved with Rosetta. Those are just my opinions of course. We’re always trying to find new ways to build interesting and lighthearted context in our classrooms, because the biggest problem in teaching languages is in keeping the kids’ interest.
