  1. Fun! I haven’t done trashketball as the reward for getting the right answer for a few years. Totally forgot about that. Now my students will be even more into Word Chunk Team Game. And I often do groups of 4, but I think you’re right, Scotty, groups of 3 are better. It’s less likely a student will check out if they’re in groups of 3 rather than 4.

  2. My WTCG variation: When a team reaches the 5 point hall mark (like 5,10,15,20 etc…) A group member will make a shot to a trashcan about 2 FULL teacher steps away. There is no backboard. IF the shot is made, the team gets 1 point. If the shot is missed than 1 point gets deducted.
Whenever I have a variation of a game like Mafia or the WTCG, I say its “version 1.5”

      1. I just use it as a brain break. Nothing too spectacular. I do a very basic one. You can “teach” introductions this way. I explain the directions as follows:
        1) I have students greet each other saying “hola” or “como estas” etc… and they shake hands. 2) The mafia gets chosen when everyone “goes to sleep”–eyes are closed and thumbs are up. I pick 4 in a class of 35.
        3) The teacher picks the mafia by touching the students thumb.
        4) have mafia look at each other while everyone stays asleep.
        5) The mafia “mark each other” by tapping the palms of anyone who shakes their hands.
        6) if a student is marked they will count to 10 and are out. (I have students cross their arms like the dead)
        7) I ask students “quien es mafia”. Then if they get it right, the mafia person is out.
        8) do this until all mafia is out OR the mafia gets everyone out.
That’s the gist. Sound like a lot but it’s more complicated to write than to do.

  3. Wow, I just played this game with my class the same way that Scotty recommended and it was a huge success. I feel like my students are going to be asking for it everyday now. ¡Gracias Señor Mississippi!
