There was no better buy-in from my students in September than when Ahmani, a leader in the classroom, shared with us that her sister is learning Spanish through class-created stories in college. Previous to that day, Ahmani would frequently ask to work from the book, which wasn’t a pleasant for me to hear.
Yes, it puts both sides in perspective: how much time in normal life they’ve had to acquire their first language, and how important all that listening time really was for their language skills to develop. It puts acquiring their new language through class way into perspective — but also shows that we’re aiming to get the same process to happen in a more focused, determined way.
