I don’t have a single artist drawing during story time. Everybody listens the first time through. Then – only after the story is finished – I retell it and the best artist draws the story in six frames on a tripod and everyone else draws the story and draws it. Sometimes I ask for electronic copies, but usually they put it in their binder and I use those illustrations for speaking assessments. I am so glad that I am reading Ben’s blog and I am learning so much from him!! Thank you Ben for coming to Delhi!
Hey Diane Linda wants to know if Textivate is Chinese compatible.
Yes, Linda, if you add a space in between each word. But you can’t play the spelling games with characters, of course. All the rest of Textivate does work. I haven’t used it in a couple years, but tried it for a few months.
However, I like World Language Games better because it is being developed highly with the interests of Chinese teachers in mind. You get your own database, add what you want, and turn on/off vocab, sentences, and stories. Costs a chunk the first year, but then after that it’s cheap (like $35/year I think).
Here’s my level 1 class site: http://www.wlangames.net/Valor.php?&MS=0 Use “Special Guest” and the password “nihao” if you want to try the games in there. It’s dense, admittedly, and the data entry is a chore, but once set up it really is great.
Thank you, Diane! I will explore.
Linda when people of the calibre of Diane and also Annick Chen swear by the Foreign Language Games model, you know it’s good stuff and aligned with CI. Annick helped the developer of the program – also a Chinese language learner – over years to come up with the program for Chinese. She used it once a week at Abraham Lincoln High (for those interested Annick is now at South High School in Denver).
There are some fluff games in there, but there’s a lot that’s very CI, too. (I think less of the vocab/phrase matching games, but there are sentence-based and story-based things available on no other online site that I know of.) Mike Ahrens is the designer and he’s great – goes out of his way to make sure things are working and trains online for new people.
Welcome Linda Li! So great to read your voice on the blog!
Thank you, Chill! Feels great to be part of this community.
And if I don’t like what she says I can walk across the hallway and complain.
Sure, you can, Ben!! Get over your cold first!
Yes, welcome Linda. A little over a week ago I attended a workshop that my district sponsored. (We do a series of workshops the week before teachers return; it’s called Super Week.) Ariene Borutzki was one of the presenters. As an illustration of the power of Comprehensible Input and TPRS, she rattled off some Mandarin that she learned from you several years ago. I think that alone went a long way toward getting some of the other teachers to at least consider what we do. Your impact spreads far beyond what you do in person. Thank you!
Hello Robert,
Thank you for sharing this. Stories like this truly reinforces what we believe and we we do! I told Ben that one of my professional goals this year is to come here more often and learn from all of you amazing educators! Thank you for having me!!
