  1. I did a Master’s in School Leadership and in it we learned that teachers need to be pushed to try new things and implement research-based teaching methods and so on and so forth. When a teacher actually does this, which is what we are all doing and we can back it up, we can still be looked at as not trustworthy. How does this happen? The teachers are on trial while the students get “compassion”.

  2. Blah… That totally sucks, but I’ve definitely had students challenge me in this respect. It certainly does piss me off, but I try to let them know that as long as they meet the requirements they can improve their grade, and explain exactly what I’m looking for. I also might ask them to explain it back to me in their own words to make sure they understand what’s going on and what my expectations are. I tell my students that the Interpersonal Skills grade usually goes in weekly, but not every week, though in this case I might offer to put the grade in for last week (if his behavior really is improving).

It certainly sucks that administration usually just wants students/parents to not complain instead of backing teacher’s professional choices.

  3. One of the rotting posts in our schools these days is precisely that lack of support of teachers to try new things and lack of any attempt to understand what those new things are. Like Bryan implies, we can’t be defensive when attacked like that. Take a deep breath and go to the categories on the right side of this page toward the bottom and find the “When Attacked” category and read some of those old posts. Keep your balance, know that you are grounded in the research and teaching to the standards, stay calm and do what Bryan said above:

  4. The thought, the image, of that kid snarkily looking at his TEACHER, smirking at her, as if, via the administrator, he had “exposed” this teacher’s “wrongdoings” professionally, when that teacher is doing everything right, and then the admin believes the kid, it’s so dark. It makes me think of how easily people can be manipulated into believing what is false, in this case by the preceding grammar/translation paradigm.

This is happening now in our larger society as well. We’re in trouble when this kind of thing happens. We must remain strong internally and not let ourselves be buffeted around by the high winds of change. We must adhere to the research and the standards, and stay true to what we know is right in our field.
