  1. Hello everyone! I’ve really missed coming on the PLC and sorry I have missed so much. I have a lot of catching up to do. Phew. I survived my first year of Elementary. Really glad I made the switch.

I support this idea Ben of using individual drawings… One of the things that really worked last year (in Kindergarten to 5th grade) came out of the Classroom Artist Job. It happened when the little guys and girls came in crying from recess or lunch and I would let them have 15 minutes to draw whatever they wanted. I started collecting and pasting the artwork on butcher block paper for each class. The next class we would discuss what the students drew the previous class and it was instantly personal and often times could be used for 1-word image or a quick story. The butcher block paper started to become an idea map for other words that came up and I would write down words if it seemed helpful or interesting.

Thanks for reminding me of the importance of meeting the kids where they are and how important self-expression is to your students.

    1. I just responded to somebody on Facebook on the lift off Page who was asking what should I do if I’m an introvert and I told him that really our only jobs are to speak slowly and comprehensibly about something that is of interest to the class, so if they wanted to just plop the students drawings on the overhead and talk about them why not go for that instead of being worried about being creative and making a story? I think we can just start small if we want to.

The success that working with the images brings breeds motivation, which is also true for teachers as well as students, so we should not put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be like everybody else or do something that’s not in a comfort zone when we’re just getting started. We should start with something that we will be successful if that just means making a one word image or having the students draw characters or picture something you’re interested in and just talking about that then that’s OK.
