Amy, you should show your admin BVP’s new book published by ACTFL about how L1 and L2 learning are fundamentally the same. A parent does not provide “feedback” to their toddler.
I believe Haiyun Lu and Diane Neubauer also had an article about this on their blog.
If you are forced to provide feedback here’s what you can do: Give a timed write and pick three errors relating to VERBS per student. If you have to grade it use Blaine Ray’s timed write rubric Highlight them in yellow, pass them back, ask students if they have any questions that we can talk grammar for the next 10 minutes max (I did this and called it “grammar seminar”). Nobody will raise their hands and the kid will want you to get back to the fun stuff. You’ll be done in 3 minutes.
BOOM. You just gave feedback and asked students to think about their learning. CHECK THAT BOX OFF.
Literally just got the copy that my library ordered at my request on Friday. It is in my hands, but I just have to find the time to digest it all 🙂
**highlight those three verb errors in yellow
Great strategy. Great correlation to the research. Thanks.
Thanks for the back up, Ben. This year (as I’ve already mentioned) has been a rough one although my direct report supports what I’m doing. It is always good to be a part of this PLC.
We who have been pouring over and figuring out ways to implement the research in our classrooms for years and years are constantly being judged by people who HAVE NOT BEEN TRAINED AND DO NOT KNOW what we are doing.
We are to be admired for our restraint when these fools try to tell us what to do so that we can get better. It’s just ridiculous and the tragedy is when younger teachers believe their sorry assesses during debriefs of observations, esp. about the speech output part. No, no, no, and no.
Greg – I see a book on ‘Defending T/CI to your High School Admin’ document or book in your near future!
I agree. The man can articulate. And I have an in with Teacher’s Discovery, who wants anything CI these days. Greg – write it.
