We now have two more jobs. These people work on reading days, when the text from the story is projected up during W/Th reading/embedded reading classes.
So the way it works is the Laser Metronome Person has the laser pointer and keeps the beat on the words we are reading. Then the Reader Leader, the superstar with the loud voice, stands up next to the projected text and reads it in the voice of a leader so that everyone can follow along.
And then the Sign Language Person (SLP) stands on the other side and signs everything. So if the sentence they are reading is …the father whispered … “Let’s begin!”…. then the SLP points to where the father was in the story the day before and then makes the whisper sign with the finger in front of his mouth.
He then does the sign we originally came up with on Monday for “Let’s Begin”, which is a sort of whirling motion of the right finger over the head. I haven’t really tested the SLP and it may prove to be too distracting, but we had fun with it today.
Just to repeat, it’s not just jGR that brings kids in more, it’s the jobs. Hire a teenager! When kids have jobs, they feel part of the group and when they feel that they are part of the group, good things happen.
