  1. I am awed and humbled by this student and this teacher. I don’t think that I could have been nearly as honest, open nor brave at those ages/stages. This is what teaching is, (the openness of the teacher and the student teaching the teacher) and what is truly beautiful about our profession. Thank you.
    with love,

  2. A seed has been planted. Hope the response of the class creates more questions than answers in the mind of this brave teacher as she continues to cover material – been there, done that!

  3. Wow! I can only support what Stephen, Laurie and “chill” have said. Kudos to your student for fearlessly taking the chance that her new teacher would throw up a wall. Kudos to this teacher for not doing so but being open to change. She seems to be one of those “other teachers” (Remember? I described being one of them): she wasn’t desperate, but she was open to whatever would improve both her teaching and the experience of her students. Let’s hope the breath of fresh air that she has felt will cause her to open wide the door to Comprehensible Input-based teaching.
Also, I think we can all learn something from your student in our approach. She didn’t use any jargon (probably because she doesn’t know it) – no PQA, PMS, PPMS, TPR, TPRS, etc. – but simply described the process by which she acquired French.
Ben, you need to put these posts together and distribute them beyond the blog. They’re gold. Would your former student mind if others of us shared with our colleagues?

  4. No I have already asked her. She is the real gold, because she thinks and lives that attitude all the time in all of her classes and beyond school. Imagine that, just when we had given up on the youth of America. Of course she would say to continue the dialogue wherever it goes. However, it’s all I can do to keep track of my current 165 students and this blog so if you want to distribute this elsewhere (Byron Despresberry has sent this thread out to his colleagues in Wisconsin) feel free. And also thanks, Robert, for your response to the Yale person – it was quite cogent. After the recent discussion about the need to keep this blog focused on just TPRS skills, even the stuff from K is pushing that, but I do want to avoid such nonproductive discussion. I wrote that Rassius stuff years ago, and now I know much better than to push this blog into discussions about pedagogy, especially with credentialed people who probably know a lot more than I do. So I think I won’t “bite” on the line he or she threw my way. Why bother? I’d rather just swim around with my TPRS fishie friends and blow language bubbles and laugh and wonder at the genius of Krashen and Ray and my students. In my graduate program at the University of Rochester in French Literature years ago I had a Yale professor. I won’t comment on that experience. It’s just a different world and no blame. He can be right. I’m probably wrong. Big ass deal.

  5. I’ve already acquired the rights to this story for a Hollywood movie. It’s so Hollywood, a perfect story so far. They’d love it, but who would believe that it’s based on a true story? Can’t wait to read what happens next!
