A Blow To His Confidence 20

I asked K to send me some sample days from her French class, so that we could get a picture of her role in this story:
There are 2 basic setups – stories at lunch and in the classroom. I’ll start with the classroom first. Classes are 90 minutes every other day, however since I have blocks off where I do not have to be in a class, I can go every day.
Monday: Story- either scripted from last year or from a student. The teacher also has a copy of the story and we meet during her planning to look over the story, decide structures etc. Oftentimes the attitude of the class will be the deciding factor as to who (she or I) will do the majority of the teaching  because if the kids are less focused they will become more focused if I teach. If they are in a good mood or the structures are more complex, she does most of the teaching with the occasional question that I will try to answer. This tends to work out because obviously she has a higher French vocabulary level  than I do.  The class size varies (20 that are supposed to be in class and then any number of students who are off and choose to be in French.) Also we typically have 1-2 teachers who have planning that come and watch/ask questions. If I don’t teach then I go with them sometimes to watch them do a story or to teach their class.
Wednesday: In a given month 3 of the 4 weeks are another reading day on Wednesday. The fourth week of the month is a story that has been either written by a student then approved by the teacher or an “improvisational  story” – 5 minutes for kids to get in groups and create a phrase that will be a structure for the day. The best 3 are picked and translated into French and then we make it up as we go based on 3 structures. Note: If student writes the story then they have the option of being narrator (teaching it) or having a role of their choice in the story.
Thursday: Writing/ grammar day. 5 minute free write. Share up to 3.  (15 minutes ) Translate 3 sentences . (20-25minutes ) Conjugation/translation game (Help for required IB and AP exams. In upper levels only  (15 minutes). Lower levels – more free write time. Brain break (10 minutes). Culture (20 minutes)
Friday – culture via reading, poem song talk about teacher’s trip (20-25 min continued from Thursday ) Brain break (5 minutes) Kindergarten day (20 minutes) basketball or conjugation game/ maze obstacle course thing  (30 min. ) What I am going to  do this weekend (15 minutes for those who want to speak).
[K will send more in a later email]
