As a language teacher, I like simplicity and therefore I like repetition. Simplicity and repetition help my students remember and allows me to see much greater engagement from them than when I try to teach too much language.
When I teach too much language my students feel – on a daily basis – the weight of that speed, and so most feel slightly lost all the time. This leads to very real classroom management problems.
We must all ask ourselves why we sometimes teach too much language. We know what the research says but we don’t do it – the students cannot handle too much language delivered to quickly.
Do I teach too much language so that my students can show themselves as “better” than the students of other teachers and therefore win me approval? Why do I do that?
Present your lessons slowly.
