A few days ago David wrote about applying CI to upper levels and I gave a response w high levels of snark. But that’s really what I believe based on my own experiences – I do believe that for all but the few gifted kids in the class it’s a fool’s errand to even try to prepare kids for AP themes with CI. My reasoning has always been that we don’t have the time.
As things would have it, Mike Peto just sent me an article today that he’s going to put on my Invisibles FB page, in which he suggests that addressing AP themes w CI not only IS possible but he shows us how it can be done.
Here’s that email:
Hi Ben –
I just wrote this article on my blog about reaching deeper with OWIs:
https://mygenerationofpolyglots.com/create-deep-rich-texts-with-your-students/
I was going to share it with your FB group but was not sure if it is 100% right. On one hand, the essence is simply about thinking deeply and taking the ideas of our students seriously. That seems 100% Ben Slavic.
On the other hand, I suggest that teachers who have trouble reading deeply into the images consult the AP themes to imagine how to think creatively. That, I fear, might lead to teachers hijacking student ideas to fit into a bullshit curriculum. 0% Ben Slavic!
Mike
