Q. What does non-targeted CI look like in a French 3 Honors class? I got some images off the internet the other day so he could describe it and that went well…
A. The question is what a French 3 class looks like in YOUR class, not in A class. It’s bc you get to choose. YOU get to choose what works best for you. But the main point here and the overall answer to your question is that you work with what comes up in the discussion, freely, not associated w any curriculum and with a brilliant kid it all goes beautifully. I once had a kid about twelve years ago who was so smart that he is now a nanotechnology scientist. He got 70 out of 70 questions right on the National French Exam that year and even found a mistake in one question missed by six native speaker editors and that took me into the bowels of AATF, which stank. So Mila you will know how well you are doing with this kid, just talking to him about what comes up, using only those strategies that work (experiment with the 27 ones in the Big CI Book) that resonate with you and your student. Yes, I am committing sacrilege here – you will know how much he is learning by how much you both smile and by how much you stay in the TL to create the din. For more on the din, search that word here or do a Google Search. It’s vintage Krashen.
