Stars

I just now skyped with my students from last year in India. It was their morning and my evening. It made me think that the greatness of teaching is not in any pedagogy, or data, or anything else except in the relationships we have with our students. It is a good reason to work hard at our craft, to provide them with a good product, for when we do that, the links with the kids become strong. Seeing them again seven months later, each of them so unique, made me think while I was talking to them how wonderful it is to be a teacher, to live in community, to help the kids on their way to adulthood without ripping them off with bad teaching. I can’t really put it into words, so I’ll stop trying, but just one ten minute skype with kids that I bonded with via the Invisibles last year, which kids in fact were the real inventors of the Invisibles, gives me pause tonight to thank every star in the universe for reminding me that when I see my former students, that they are stars as well.
