Workshop Proposal Template

Many in our PLC are presenting workshops these days. Here is a template we can work with from Alisa:

Proposal For [name of school]
Reimagining and Re-implementing [name of language] Instruction:
Teacher Training by

I commit to helping [name of school] realize its goal of improving [name of language] proficiency outcomes for all its students. I hope to establish an ongoing relationship with [name of school], in order to improve the [name of language] experience for both teachers and students. Eventually, I’d love to see [name of school] become a lighthouse school, convening and training regional [name of language] teachers in Comprehensible Input professional development.

Recommended Training Content:

1. Train [name of language] faculty grades 1-8 & administration in Second Language Acquisition theory, to establish a best-practice rationale for pedagogy; demonstrate mini-lessons that employ Comprehensible Input (CI) strategies. (Experiencing the strategies as a student of a language with which you are not familiar best illustrates their effectiveness and power.)

2. Train faculty in CI-specific instructional strategies and classroom management. Guide volunteer teachers through practicing their new skills in group and on peers (within the Positive Coaching framework).

3. Provide, explore, and co-create compelling T/CI novice [name of language] instructional materials, with samples for both lower and upper grades.
Materials development training in:
*Creating emergent One Word Images (credit: Ben Slavic) for scene and story building
*Creating skeleton story scripts, differentiated for lower and upper grades.

4. How to create class readings and embedded readings (pared down and scaled up).

5. Adapting existing texts, such as picture books, to ‘comprehens-ify’ [name of language] reading

6. Assessing student language growth over time (5th grade and up); reporting on student progress (all grades)

7. Explore T/CI-aligned curriculum documents

8. Train the teachers in how to use video to improve instruction (self and demo videos)

9. Recommendations and resources for teachers to improve their own [name of language] proficiency and usage

10. Training also includes: exploring current curricular materials and applying CI criteria for evaluating them;

11. Participant Q & A time at [name of school] training and ongoing via email and blog; access to a plethora of resources.
