So my sixth graders just came in for an hour and a half of fun. Of course, we’ll burn ten minutes at least with SSR. The greatest language gains will happen now during these awesome (read Krashen’s The Power of Reading) first minutes of class. This is the class that read for 41 minutes once.
Guess what they are doing now before the bell? Invisibles. They are drawing them on their iPads, half of them anyway. It’s what they do. They want their characters in a story.
It is incredible how much instant camaraderie and community building and trust is built in an instant with an Invisible! I’m looking at a jellyfish from South Africa right now and it just got into the story we’ll do after Star of the Week today.
I love the way the Invisibles change everything, how they build interest and how they personalize content instantly. All so new and wonderful.
If you don’t remember the Invisibles I was talking about them a few months ago. Kandy the Korn is an Invisible. But then everything here got swallowed up by the most necessary thread on assessment and good that it did! Best thread ever on this blog.
