Report from the Field – Greg Stout

This is news from Greg. For those who aren’t familiar with Greg, he’s the guy in Durham who started doing CI instruction like a month ago and has rocked his classroom every day since then. In this Report from the Field he shares with us a rather surprising development in his career:

In case anyone’s interested in a French (or Spanish or Latin or German) job in Durham, NC:  I turned in my resignation yesterday to my district.  I got accepted last week to be an English language assistant next year in France through TAPIF.  This is mildly bittersweet becuase 1) I’m just getting my feet wet in TCI and next year would be my first time doing it from the very beginning of the semester, 2) I just got my numbers for next year and they have almost tripled and 3)  I’m afraid whoever comes in is going to be riding a grammarmobile.

I would LOVE it if a TCI person came in to take the job.  It would be sad to see someone come in and kill these awesome kids with grammar and conscious language learning.  Also, we have one spanish teacher leaving and our german/latin teacher is retiring which might open up a latin-only position.  If you’re interested, you’ll probably start seeing the positions on the NC Dept. of Public Instruction job search page in the next few months (Northern High School, Durham Public Schools), or just email me and I can connect you with my principal before the jobs get posted.  The administration here is very supportive and hands-off when it comes to letting teachers teach.  Also, there is NOTHING at all right now mandated by the disctrict for languages as far as testing or curriculum coverage and our department head doesn’t mandate anything either.  It’s basically an ideal place for doing TCI!  Come teach in Durham!
