Red Tape Study Guides

A question from Melissa:

Hi Ben,

My principal just sent out an email asking for samples of our “study guides” for assessments when an individualized education plan or 504 plan requires it for the students. How do you handle this when you want to give a quiz on the fly? If a study guide is legally mandated for all assessments for certain students, how do you (or anyone else) handle that?

They are also making “word walls” mandatory for all teachers to help with our common core testing.

One of my students who is a student who “does not like school” (according to her) stayed after school to make up some work for me. She said to me, “I really get it when you do that thing where you walk around the room and then go write it on the board.” then she said “if i could be graded on participating in that, I’d get an A for sure.” and then she said “I was so discouraged when you played the cd of the spanish in the beginning of the year and quizzed us on it… it was too fast. i immediately got scared and felt like i couldn’t do this. it was too fast and too much”.   I didn’t even have to say anything, she just provided me with all that information – like a poster child for this method.

Anyway, just thought I’d share. I know states are different with their rules around educational plans for special ed students, but if you could weigh in on my question above, that would be appreciated. Thanks!

Melissa
