When Parents Are Also Language Teachers

Ben,

The subject of this email says it all. How do I handle a (so far) polite yet concerned email from a parent, concerning her child’s grade, who also alleges to be a Spanish teacher? She mentions that the student’s grade prevented him from honor roll and it concerns her. She says she would just like to know exactly how her son is assessed and includes that she “hasn’t seen any books or materials come home all marking period” and “are there any objective assignments” that she can see.

In the same breath she asks me if “there are any rubrics or assessment papers” to show her how he did verbally “with the material”.

Her son is a bright boy and does fairly well in class. He gets involved in the back and forth flow of conversation. Only a few times would he blurt. Overall he is a go-to kid for me and I know I can count on him when the class is a dud…but based on the jGR he was not higher than an 8/10. Once in awhile he showed a 10/10. But on average an 8/10 which is a C grade in my school. And I have the jGR set at 50%. I’m uncomfortable because it IS weighted heavily. I just don’t know what to say to this woman….

Regards,

Jen
