The Self Reflection Piece

This article is to pick up on the thread we had in spring and summer here about getting the kids to self reflect on and discuss what it means to do a comprehensible input class:

I think we should use David Sceggel’s rubric a lot now. This may be the most important time to get the kids to think about what they are doing in class.

If the kids have been in class for, say, two weeks, and yours is their first CI class, they are right now going through some really rough changes from what they know school to be. David’s rubric forces them into the self-reflection necessary for the CI switch to be turned on in their brains.

We also have the rigor posters (see the resources page of this site), and they can work hand in hand with David’s rubric. However we do it, this week and next, this self reflection piece is going to be key to making sure the kids buy into the big change they are being required to make. A lot of discipline issues will be alleviated if we do this.

We had originally thought to try to fit in the rigor/self reflection part of class (to be done in L1) at the end of class after the quick quiz, but that is something I am finding difficult to do with my 48 minute class periods. Just thinking out loud here about the need to talk to the class about the way we do class, and get that buy in. I’m using David’s rubric to start, and then going with the rubrics posters next week.
