I have started to call roll about 2/3 of the way through the class period. It is so fast to do it that way because I know, since I have been teaching to the eyes for a half an hour up to that point, exactly who is absent. I just tell the kids we are going to take a break, and then I go over to the computer, call roll, and get right back into the CI or quick quiz or whatever was happening when we stopped. I never did like calling roll at the beginning of the class. It wastes a ton of time, over the course of the year, when I could be doing CI.
