Hi Ben,
I teach French, grades 4-6. Wednesday night is our parent open house – students walk around the school with their parents to show them their classrooms, and take them to the “specials” as well (art, music, French, etc.). I have often had lots of “stuff” for parents to look at but now that I have shifted to TPRS, I don’t have much physical material to show all that we have done in class. Do you have suggestions (or can you post this)?

My response: I know that we don’t have a lot of output type stuff to show with beginners, at least I hope we don’t, so why not collect a group of parents and do a little ten minute demo? Give the parents a few words, and PQA them and then start a little story. Example:
Hey everybody, since we now have to teach using the language and we can’t teach out of books anymore, I thought that we could take the next ten minutes to show you how your child experiences French in my classroom. The first thing that you need to know is that if you don’t understand, please go like this with your hand (the hand over the head), and, if you do understand, let me know that you understand through your eyes. Any questions? O.K. – here we go! Then go write down “man” and “woman” and “sees” and “smiles at” and then say what each means and gesture each one and then get an actor up, a dad, and have him look at a woman, his wife preferably, and say, “Class, a man sees a woman!” and circle that sentence like there is no tomorrow at a super slow rate using Point and Pause if necessary so that there is not one person in the room who doesn’t get what it means. Hold them accountable for the hand over the head! Work with your actor. Then, if time, say, “Class, the man smiles at the woman!” and circle that fella for all it’s worth. Everyone will leave laughing, and you only have to do it four or five more times that night.
