Make it clear to them that periods of silence, when the class is trying to come up with cute answers to a question, are welcome. Just sit there in that quiet space. It’s o.k. – sometimes everybody just needs time to think. If the silence really drags out, do a retell right then. Sometimes act like you can’t remember all the details on the retell. That makes them mad and then you just say what they tell you like a kind of verbal cloze exercise. Start fights. Stay in the target language. They feel like they are in charge when you allow them to correct you on details. Admire them. Honor them. They are worthy of being so honored. How great they are! Watch as the story re-emerges. If it is in a different from, that is o.k.
