The job that I am leaving in favor of my new life as a part time teacher was characterized by one thing – we never confronted each other. It was taboo. Who can survive in an environment like that? Michael Fullan believes that we have the moral imperative to confront each other. I like that. It is part of a larger vision that shared leadershiip is essential. Fullan also suggests that “brutal facts” are ok if they lead to change, and that we need the ability to thrive on chaos rather than merely cope with the status quo. School cultures can change, but it’s not going to happen anytime soon in some places.
