She must have a great funding resource. But students creating and owning their own images is POWERFUL.
We have known for a long time the power of imagery much like music cements in the brain whatever we want to teach. Children read signs long before the formal word. As an adult I learned clothing and household items in L2 by sketching them and labeling. My laundry vocabulary is literally a picture of a clothesline in the yard with “me” hanging the laundry. I don’t ever use those words in any conversation other than my mind as I do the laundry each week.
So many of our students will never visit their L2 countries where language flows freely. The only place they may ever have an opportunity to use those words they struggled to grasp will only be in their minds. Gift them their images, laughter, and memories of a classroom where learning was creative a d fully participated by an entire community.
