  1. I don’t know if this is typical, but I had two Spanish I students last year transfer to private schools; one is doing fine in Spanish II and the other one–at an exclusive prep school–decided to retake Spanish I, even though it is really easy for him. I recommended some grammar sites for each of these guys, but they didn’t take me up on it and still managed. They were both “‘A” students, so that might make a difference. Are these motivated students? Adaptable?

I handled that OK because I didn’t have to face them again. I think I’ll have a much harder time next year because I will still see my former students at our 400 student high school. One girl who is really gifted at picking up Spanish told me that she got a “C” last year in Spanish I and won’t be taking Spanish III. Makes me sad.

  2. Over an eight year period, when I taught middle school, a lot of my best students (not mechanics of language but masters of input) – 8th graders, mainly, went on to high school and quit in the same way, either after one more semester (!) or one more year.

They felt stupid, is what they told me. Now that is a time to grab a wad of Q-tips, right there, because it has nothing to do with the instruction they received in my classroom and everything to do with what happened to them in the classroom of the high school teacher, who only cared about her own 4%ers, those she considered real students of language. Can’t do much about that!
