  1. Jody, I think we share a common experience: that it’s not personally insulting when kids don’t have the focus that we bring to the class and that it is our job to help them get there. I have come to the conclusion, however, that punishment/reward, aka “consequences” only coerces them into a surface behavior that is not genuinely “their decision.” That realization keeps things much more interesting for me. How can I arrive each day with enough boldness and creativity to invite them into what I am doing? I have to also realize that they walk in the door with a life experience that I know nothing about and that all my creativity in the world may not speak to. That, lastly, means that at the end of the class, I have to invite Jakory or Jillian to stay afterward so that I can ask them what’s going on. They may, or may not, choose to trust me with the answer.
