1 thought on “Speed Reading”

  1. Thanks, Ben. I encourage people to watch the 15 minute video at the link Ben provided. It explains all you need to know about this activity.
I’ve made speed reading in my classroom an assessment tool (which doubles as more CI) after each TPRS theme/cycle and speed reading is also 1 of my “District-Determined Measures” – state mandated pre and post tests of growth. My kids will sit 3 different speed reading texts, each of increasing frequency and sentence length. In October. Again in June. I’ll see speed and comprehension score increases.
Translating the book to other languages isn’t probably going to work – cognate and frequency-wise. But you can all create these on your own! Simply write a story with 5-10 T/F or multiple choice questions. Kids get timed as they read and then take the quiz without looking back at the text. Optionally, kids can graph their progress.
Here’s the graph my kids use:

You’ll have to adjust the y-axis if your stories are not exactly 400 words long. A graph like this could easily be also used for speed writes if you do those (I don’t).
If you have stories of variable lengths, then use this excel program to quickly and effortlessly get the words per minute conversions (just enter total # of words into the yellow cell):

In the spring I will probably run (again) my “intensive speed reading course” (1 speed reading per class for 5-6 weeks). For this, you need a course book.
