  1. This is exactly the kind of blog entry that I need. I’ve been trying to watch myself lately: what do I do well? what do I not do well? And while my principal does a fine job of telling me if my students are engaged (even if all they’re doing is following me with their eyes and laughing appropriately) and loving the amount of French she hears, no one in my school can tell me if I’m doing CI right.
So here’s what I’ve noticed: I can tell a story well, I keep their rapt attention by the emotion in my voice and on my face, I can create fun and cute readings that use the structures and give kids a sense of success. But my questioning sucks. I don’t/can’t PQA long enough and deep enough, I don’t circle enough during a story, and I can’t think of questions in French when we’re reading. Three different steps, same skill. Questioning. I suck at it. So I’m going to keep reading your blog entries and post the six-pack to remind myself to be fearless and keep working at it.
I’m hoping that when we submit videos, you and others can help me improve on this skill. Merci!

  2. Once we get the videos going, we’ll learn questioning on a cell level. It really is a body/mind thing, questioning. Or maybe more accurately it is not just a mind thing. I can’t wait. And, echoing what you said in that other comment Dori, we will do the video piece fearlessly as well. And, hoping not to push the image too far, I have noticed that the better I get at questioning, the less fear, the more command, I have in my voice, which comes from my body. Hmmm. I just watched one of those French intellectual discussion films so I have an excuse for the above. What a language! What a people!

  3. Dori,
Give yourself a break.you are working on giving CI all of the time. Yes it is nice if you remember to slow down and ask more questions, but dang it girl! You do the best you can!
Yep we will all improve over the years. But please don’t harp on things that you don’t do well enough… It sounds like that old disease “perfectionism” that keeps teachers feeling like they are “allllllllmost perfect but not quite.”
A really simple way to improve your CI is do more comprehension checks:
    What did I just say?
    What did I just ask?
What does the word ___ mean?
Sometimes in the heat of class you can’t seem to get more questions in because you are just not into questions right now. But you can quickly do a comprehension check!
So give yourself a BIG pat on the back for the things you do WELL!!
