  1. Absolutely!!! And if it is scheduled so that people are just wandering in and out, you can print up stories of what you have done, or since your kids are younger, maybe even stick figure illustrations with your stories. If students are there, they will be the only evidence you need, the kids will take it from there. If it is an adult-only affair, write the English translations for them to wander around and read. If your school allows videotaping, consider taping a class or two and play that as folks come in, go out or wander around!

  2. The issue of parent night came up on Bob Patrick’s and my Latin list recently. Teachers really want to impress parents and prospective parents, so that the kids will choose to take Latin. Their goal is to teach the parents some Latin, to show how easy the method is. But I see a few obstacles here: 1. because everybody’s running around, you often have less than 10 minutes. 2. Parents can be distracted by each other. 3. you feel the pressure, and that can make things seem forced and rushed. Here’s my response to these comments:
This year for my 10 minutes (back to school night), I chose not to teach the parents Latin, but rather to introduce them to the process of PQA, done in English. I prefaced it by saying that I want them to see the process of a typical class conversation. After 5 minues, I then said: this is basically an English translation of what happens in my classroom after the first week. Then there was a bit of time for Q and A. It went pretty well, and I was told that many parents said positive things to the administrators about my demo. This allows parents to get a “feel” for your classroom environment, which in my opinion as a parent, is much more important than the content of the class. When my daughters go to school, I will encourage them to take whatever language is taught in a communicative supportive way by a kind teacher who listens to them.

Another easy idea to incorporate if Ss will be present: The 6th grade T/CI French teacher recently held a Reading Celebration – a parent or other teacher – whoever could come – came in to read w/a student. All Ss were paired/tripled up w/a grown up (incl some admin). They could read aloud in French from one of the teacher or class-created and previously read books, translate (or not). She has a box of many class stories that are also class illustrated. The teacher gave a brief overview on T/CI, the power of reading, she cautioned against correcting, and they read together!
