    1. Hi Tamula,

I’d love to see your dictation info. I’ve done a typed version of dictation with some of my classes and am now convinced I should put it into the weekly schedule – it was very revealing to me, and very good practice for the students.

For other language teachers: typing in Chinese requires mastery of the pinyin phonetic system and recognition of the characters you want that have that pinyin sound (there are a lot of homophones, and newer input systems don’t expect you to type the tone number). It’s a skill of its own, different from handwriting.

  1. Diane, I posted my dictation format under “Dictee” then “Dictation format” so that it would be indexed properly. Hope you can find it okay. Let me know if you have any other ideas on this!

  2. Just a short follow-up note – I just got back from this trip with my 8th graders. It went really, really well. The man who came along with us to be, as I described it to him, “the cool guy who speaks Chinese,” was great with the kids and great at making his Mandarin simple & understandable. My students had really positive feedback about him as a person and as a Chinese speaker. My goal to have a comprehensible, Chinese atmosphere as we toured around the most Chinese-influenced city in the Americas (in my opinion) was totally met.

I also learned on the trip which students are ready, even eager, to speak in sentences, which are around the word/phrase level of output, and which are still finding aural comprehension challenging – but have been trying to hide it during class. There was a lot of progress for the students in all these categories. I also had a lot of fun!

If there are other Mandarin teachers (or group members who know some) that want some ideas for planning a similar trip to San Francisco, I am happy to help.
