  1. Oh this brought tears to my eyes. I have worked with so many ELL kids over the years and they are the most abused in our system. I let many heritage speakers take my class simply just to have a brain break. They would laugh along with the stories and listen to their peers stumble through Spanish and gobble up the opportunity to be successful for a minute. I spoke kindly of their culture and nationality and let them be the star. They never laughed at the kids trying to speak because they knew how brave they were trying. And if they did, I helped them to see the risk.
How cruel is this system? How disheartening it is to lack empathy. I see the lack of empathy that is directed towards teachers and of course we carry it onto the next victim. Disrespect breeds more disrespect. Hurt begets more hurt. And on and on.

  2. I’m forming a Committee – I just call it The Committee – to get some of us to start doing what we can to change the way we teach now using CI to making CI really work by aligning with the research. Also another goal of this group – down the road – will be to try to bridge the chasm between WL instruction and ELA.

  3. The thing is who is going to bring the change?

The traditional CI teachers (used to be TPRS) claim to be the ones bringing the change but they are lying about their motives. If they really wanted to help, they would get on the train to force the CI movement to really align with the research if kids like Javiar are going to be helped. You see, he came from Mexico and (I love what you are doing with your heritage kids by the way) and he was asked to read Carol Gaab novels after arrival. But he couldn’t read in French bc he had not had enough auditory CI first. And this happened bc Denver Public Schools considered reading those novels as a big deal in DPS level 1 classes. I wish I hadn’t believed them. Javiar didn’t need suffer like that. I saw him trying so hard every day. I just wish I had dumped all that TPRS stuff earlier.

  4. For some students reading is helpful. It moves at their pace. I was one of those. I was way to shy to speak both in German and Spanish 1. But . . . in my mind I was not shy. And I comprehended what I was reading and what I was hearing. But reading is one way I access information easily.

Now in Mvskoke I long for a “Duck and Jane” reader. Such does not exist I that I have found yet. So I continue on creating tiny paragraphs of simple phrases often used. Maybe it is better that I explore the language this way at my own pace with what is compelling for me. Thank goodness I have traditional speakers to help me.
