Wow, that’s interesting.
I had a kid say quickly, and seemingly without even thinking about it, the answer to a question yesterday. I stopped right there, and reminded the class that THIS is what I’m trying to get to be able to do, react promptly and naturally without having to think about it much, if at all, and not to memorize or analyze. Reading this today was very appropriate and therefore compelling. Thanks Chris for the summary!
Speaking spontaneously after enough input has been received? Gosh, that doesn’t sound hard enough. Don’t they need to memorize something and do lots of homework and stuff like that to learn a language? How odd!
I know that eventually to write this sentence I needed to make many many vocabulary flash cards.
Yes James. And obviously all that memorization of verb forms when you were learning English worked. You correctly used “know” with “I” and “needed” with “I”. Nice job on those. Now, since you are an adult, I’m going to assume that your memorization was more than just on the first person singular forms but also on the other forms, as well as in about ten tenses. 6 forms of one verb times 10 tenses = 60 x at least 300 verbs = 18,000 verb forms. You are a rock star! All those kindergarten teachers who drilled that into you, as well as your parents, should all be commended for their great work in teaching you English.
Yes, my mother never read me a single book. It was all flash cards. Thank you for finally understanding, Ben.
And she probably never spoke to you until after you had memorized a lot of cards and completed a sufficient number of fill in the blank common exams. Otherwise, how would you understand what she was saying?
