As I was writing the paragraphs above, I remembered a dream I had when I first met the legendary Susan Gross in Colorado Springs in about 2002 to attend one of her workshops. This really happened in the dream: she was riding around my classroom on a very high horse. Her cowboy hat was scraping the ceiling of my classroom. Those were the days when – whenever she came to Denver – she would visit me in my classroom and teach me how to teach using CI (TPRS at the time).
And wait before using the novels until they can read them – generally not before level 2. That means give them the level 1 novels in level 2. Then they can do it.
If you try to teach the easiest novels before level 2, you engage their cognitive, analytical faculty. That’s not what the research says to do.
You can’t “teach” a novel. They should read the things they create in class until the second year.
Who knows this best? Susan Gross. She has always said that when the kids read the novels they should experience them “like a movie in their minds” (i.e. no thinking, no analysis, which acts as handcuffs on their understanding of the CI and drags them down).
