  1. therefore, group work, cooperative learning and paired practice activities should be minimal as they do not lead to language acquisition.

    How true.

But is this in response to “I.8 Promotes student communication and collaboration…”? If so, it seems that an observer would see a lot of “student communication and collaboration” as students suggest cute answers, act, negotiate meaning, etc.

Maybe I did not look closely enough to see the buzz words (group work, cooperative learning and paired practice activities).

  2. I’m so happy to hear that we have Diana Noonan and Meredith Richmond working on creating an accurate “Framework for Teaching and Learning” (to borrow the title of Chicago Public Schools’ version of LEAP) in regards to foreign language classrooms. And we also supposedly have the Common Core creating standards for foreign language teaching… I am certainly going to come back to this Appendix as a point of reference throughout the year.

So DPS has developed its own evaluation tool in responce to SB 191? Or is it the same as the tool that all the schools in the state are going to be using? I teach here in Colorado too, but I am confused about this LEAP document. I thought all Colorado teachers were going to be evaluated using the same document.

So the LEAP Appendix for WL Teachers is just for DPS teachers, is that right?

Yes Michael, Diana and Meredith did that just for DPS. And even within DPS, we have to remind principals and observers about the appendix.

So I was observed by my principal recently and during my post observation I brought the appendix, just in case and to defend myself, would I have needed to. Fortunately I didn’t need to, but that is why it’s there for. Foreign Languages are different, very different as you know, therefore a different set of criteria should be used to assess us, which is why this document was created.

I encourage any teachers outside of DPS to show this document to their administrators .
Wouldn’t it be awesome if other districts started to use it?!

Yes, it would be very awesome. Could you image the panic of non-CI/TPRS teachers if this was adopted other districts or the whole state?! I have and will continue using this document with administrators, although I have put off a couple of administrators in the past by showing them it. I think they were thinking, “What? Who’s this guy thinking he gets different criteria just becuase he teaches Spanish?” Goes to show you how little they know.

  5. I think this is the kind of appendix that needs to happen with the Danielson Rubric for CI language teachers. There is discussion in moreTPRS listserve right now on this issue. I know Laurie created, with their permission, explanations to go with the rubric to indicate how CI teachers are rigorous and student-centered, for example.
