Here are two posts that I enjoy reading at this time of the year:

—I have to agree with Ben about this feeling “fruity”, but I would use the term “douchey” as that’s one of my favorite terms anyways. Yes, I”m one of those people always saying “douchebag”, sorry, can’t help it. I like Kate’s idea about fist bumping though, I prefer that. I personally would just feel like a big douchebag shaking each kid’s hand as they entered, especially when NO OTHER teacher in my school does that. At least fist bumps are cool and I”m still being the dominant chimp by making the most touches. Plus, I know that some of those middle schoolers aren’t washing their hands after going to the bathroom.
HELL YES!
This is pure gold. Thank you for the post. Really really good!
If anyone else is in the situation I am — with students returning to my class more than one year in a row — I shared the email I wrote to ask to meet with parents and 3 students to head off inappropriate use of English before the school year begins:
https://benslavic.com/blog/forum/general-discussion-1/parentstudent-meetings-my-email-to-invite/#p1958
I’m seeking to meet each family separately and involve the students in procedures I’ll set up to build better flow of Chinese in class. I have a list of ideas and I am honestly not settled on exactly what I what to do (apart from keeping Interpersonal Communication Skills Rubric in use and reducing my own tendency to respond to students if they speak English at the wrong time). Regardless of how/if parents respond, I’m glad I did this and I liked the tone and approach.
The link to Nathan’s starting the year out with postcards is broken. Do you have an accurate link. I will be using TPRS for the first time this year and want to start with Circling with Balls. I was thinking maybe starting with something a little different with upper levels so they don’t feel like they are learning the exact same thing as their younger siblings.
Thank you!

When I get a link that is broken, I search the blog (upper right) and often find it that way.
Thanks so much Ruth! Good to know.
I think the micro mini stories, or whatever we were calling them, should be part of those early on in the year activities along with OWI, CWB, etc…. we had a thread going about them last year…things like has-wants-gives, or wants-goes, or the one you did with enters, sits, smiles.
