The more film I watch of me in the classroom, like coaches watching film to prepare for games, the more I see. What really strikes me, over and over, is that all of those little explanations and cute comments about grammar and whatever, all those little diversions from both story and reading CI, are mere wastes of time (culture discussions excluded). As much as I like to impress my students and myself with my erudition, at the end of the day, they are like mud on the windshield, smeared across the windshield wipers by the ego of my intellect, which, sneak that it is, blocks the clarity of the lesson in L2. I can see clearly now that L2 shouldn’t be interrupted for any reason. The kids work so hard to “lock on” to the CI, and they don’t need the interruptions – they are not benefitting from them. I just have to learn to keep the story going, keep the choral translation going in reading classes. It’s not about me, it’s about the CI. Damn!
