What fascinates me about Helen is that she did in fact have 19 months of input before losing her speech function altogether and then it took some incredibly gifted and insightful and slow training by Anne in studying the formation of sound in the larynx, etc. to eventually lead to what Helen was able to do with speech.
If this example from Mary Beth is not a statement about input preceding output and why we can’t get people talking too early I don’t know what is. 19 months of input are about the time we need to neurologically wire our kids to the beginnings of speech. So why would we go into this coming year wasting time with anything but CI input in the form of speaking to our students in the TL and reading?
It’s a caution that we would do well to reflect on this story before asking for too much speech output from our kids too fast. If Helen had suffered that illness at 10 months of age, what would have happened?
