I’m having something of a renaissance with Vygotsky. I personally have mined all I can from Krashen and see Vygotsky as perhaps the one researcher who can help us more with the new challenges brought by COVID.
Frank James Johnson has said, “A Zoom CI WL classroom has much the same potential for language acquisition as its fully live equivalent.” How to bring that about? All I think we need to do is bring Vygotsky’s science into the online language teaching problem.
In that interest, I post below this rather-lengthy-but worth-it article by Seth Chaiklin on Vygotsky. I think that at least being aware of the Zone of Proximal Development and how it relates to online instruction will help in this new time. This is work that in my opinion will need to be done in the future no matter what happens with brick and mortar instruction.
