Beautiful

Interesting that this was from ’08. It’s even more relevant now. I see this primarily as a call to change our schools first from a philosophical position. In my opinion, if there is to be some sort of revolution or sweeping change in education, it should start with the foundations and first principles, like what is a school, what is its mission, what are we trying to do, etc. I think this is happening in some corners. There’s so much bureaucracy, politicking, and money involved that we’ve lost sight of what we’re trying to do. We’ve forgotten about forming kids, loving them, educating them, etc. I think that we don’t know who we are anymore. No one has told them or fought for their humanity. Not many people have looked them in the eyes, told them they’re good men/women, disciplined them with charity instead of out of spite, etc. Great reflection.
Things won’t change until we understand that the curriculum is the language and not lists of things the kids are “supposed to know”. The human back and forth that Jake refers to above is the real curriculum. The standard says so.
The shift is to the human interaction piece – the Interpersonal Skill – is just massive and so it won’t happen fast. In my view it is about a long- awaited shift in humanity from intellect/mind to intuition/heart in the same way that there was an earlier shift from instinct to intellect.
It’s time in my view for us to no longer be centered in our minds (where greed, etc. reside), overcoming all those low qualities, and moving to living in our hearts. It’s finally time for that and that is why there is so much suffering now.
The heart is the real foundation of the Invisibles. The platform of the Invisibles is not the mind; it is the heart.
True that the language is all around us. It is the perceived world understood. Also, education needs to step into the role of transmitting culture and values. In general the home isn’t doing enough of it anymore. Problem there’s such a huge contention about what those values are and so much political BS right now that I expect nothing to be done in my lifetime. We need human connection not to be foremen for a factory with mechanical heartless tasks.

Tolstoy once called his experience in school as exactly that, almost the same words. If I can find the quote I’ll put it here.
