  1. Thank you!
I have adapted these rules for my elementary classroom. At my school (private – progressive) we were trained to follow the premises of the Responsive Classroom, which focuses on the K-8 grades and how social-emotional learning is connected to academic learning. Anyway, since I have young learners, most of them are in their early literate stages so I drew some icons that reflect the rules (I tell them that these are the super tips to be a good learner in my classroom). We have the first 6 weeks of school to develop and focus on routines, expectations, etc. so at this point, we have gone through every rule through interactive modeling (RC). Even though I have the rules in Spanish, the icons and all the work we have done with each of them, help the students to know what each of them mean and what kind of behavior supports them. I also have a cool down nook that I call “rincón de paz”. Whenever they feel that they need some time off to refocus they go there, before they show me the peace sign with one hand and I respond showing the peace sign back, then they go there. Sometimes, I have to show the peace sign to a student who seems to need it, and he/she goes immediately to the rincón de paz. I hope this continues to work the rest of the year. So far I have identified the students that will present some challenges but that is just sad. They can be so sweet and kind outside the classroom, in the hallway, on the playground, etc. but yet they have a hard time self-regulating during class. They are trying, some human beings have internal problems that go beyond us. It is just sad and we only can show more compassion to them. That is all we can do, be compassionate.

  2. Tina, when I taught high school and elementary school, I also used Fred Jones’ book “Tools for Teaching.” I did a graduate course once on classroom management — I needed it for certification — and we studied different management styles. I decided to go with Jones’ approach, I think it was the best. I also used incentives, which I learned from him.

  3. Hey Larry… What I like is the way Tina and I have applied Fred’s various and somewhat complex ideas to our own field. I think sometimes we have too many ideas from too many places and now with our Classroom Rules “smile” thing – the first move we make – and then with the second move, the Queen Elizabeth stare, and then third in that order when we kneel down and say a certain set of sentences in a certain order to the offending kid at eye level (Tina has video on that), we know that we don’t have to get confused by too much information and can do a fixed-response-every-time technique in exactly the same way every time, doing one of those three levels depending on the situation. Can you tell I’m currently starting a new book on this important topic? I want it to be clear and easy and a routine. The kids need that consistency and clarity in our responses to their youthful attempts to challenge us. Thanks for your comment.

        1. I know that the book will be an absolute hit. In CI there is so much information scattered everywhere about management, it has not been organized. Combined with some good writing, it will definitely allow teachers to at least “try out” CI.
