If anyone wants to follow up on this idea, there’s a karaoke-style video of that movie scene and the Mandarin official dubbing with Jackie Chan’s singing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcWCG3K2BLk (traditional script though).
For my young classes, there’s a lot of new vocab though: a lot about endurance, focus, etc. But it would be cool for them to know “nan2 zi4 han4” means a strong, tough guy, and my students have always gotten a kick out of learning that Jackie Chan also has a singing career!
The song “Duibuqi wode Zhongwen bu hao” was a big hit with my Chinese 1 students and the lyrics stuck like glue. Just search the first couple of words on YouTube and you will find it.
I also want to suggest the film Ocean’s Heaven but only for more mature upper class men. My Advanced kids loved it and because of the subject matter (about an autistic kid and his dad) there is lots of repetition of phrases. I have a hearing impaired student in the class who threw a paper ball at the screen when the autistic kid got yelled at by a bus driver in the movie. They were empathetic to the main character.
Amazon now has “High School Musical in China” which has some good songs in it and might be a good end of the year movie.
My students love that song, too! I agree, very understandable. We’ve used it to learn words like China, USA, UK, English and Chinese languages. My 6th graders have nearly memorized that song.
Another good one a step up from there: “Duimian de nvhai kan guo lai” sung by A Du or Richie Ren.
Hello Chinese teachers out there,
Is “Literacy” the buzzword in your school too?!
I just found this really cute Tedtalk on how to learn to read chinese characters easily.
Check it out!
