  1. A great mangaement tool is DICTOGLOSS.

An alternative way of conducting a dictogloss activity is to have the teacher read a short, relevant text three times. The first time, the students listen only, and do not take notes. The second time, they are allowed to note down several key words. The third time, the learners are allowed to write as much as they desire. Following this, the students are instructed to create a summary of what they have heard on their own. When this task has been completed, they take their own summaries and work with a partner to co-construct a summary based on their individual work. Following this, they join with another pair to create a group of four to collaboratively reconstruct the text. Then, students compare their reconstruction of the work with the original to discuss similarities and differences from the source text. This activity can be used, for example, to draw attention to a particular language feature or to help develop students’ abilities to synthesize information.[5]

Greg, I take it you’ve actually done this Dictoglass with your students. Did you do it the same way you have it described above, or some variation?

  3. This is how I do it (partly stolen from Wikipedia)

    DICTOGLOSS INSTRUCTIONS

    1) Teacher reads. Students listen but don’t take notes
    2) Teacher reads. Students take notes on key words only.
    3) Teacher reads. Students write as much as possible
    4) Students work in groups of two to reconstruct the text and fill in missing gaps.
    5) Students work in groups of four and reconstruct the text and fill in missing gaps. Create one master copy of text to turn in with all group members names on it.
    6) Original text is revealed
    7) Each group underlines all differences between their text and that original.
    8) Do a choral translation with original text.

(You can game-ify it by saying that the group that has the least differences between their text or the original gets a point of extra credit. I do this at the end of the year when motivation is running low.)
