We just started BB wants a Dog today in the 3rd grade. I find that when I do some talking that incorporates the language of the chapter – non-targeted – then the independent reading goes smoothly. So for example today, I talked them thru a slideshow of famous dogs that I made a few years back – we looked at the dog colors, sizes, who their friends are (i.e., Goofy is a friend of Mickey Mouse), whether they wear a collar, etc. Chapter 1 was a breeze because it’s super easy and because I looked it over and proceeded with the slide show in this ‘informed’ but NT way…
I totally agree that if it’s not effortless then it’s not worthwhile. There aren’t enough really easy ones out there.
But more are coming all the time – we are reading BB tells the truth in another class, too. It’s got half the headwords as BB wants a dog!

  2. I am happy to announce that novels are possible at least the tprs publishing ones. Today, i explained the basic synopsis of the 5 book i bought for my French two. They are novice level 1 texts including pirates, les problemes au paradis etc… the kids ran to get them! They were the middle and fast processors who got them. One student got one then gave it to another. She choose to read class stories. I asked them after 10 minutes if it was difficult. One student said ” i can read straight through”. Any words that are not known are in the glossaries so that helps but my only gripe is that some of them have “textbook” expressions that are less frequent in casual conversation. Example in French is the use of Nous instead of On. But these are minor roadblocks for my avid reader students.
