  1. I truly think listening with the intent of undestanding IS THE MOST IMPORTANT VALUE we can ever demonstrate in our actions and teach by those actions to students. It is a tough guideline to life to,learn but truly a path to better communication and understanding of our world.

I wish all of you well in your work this first semester. Never before have U.S. educators faced such a chaotic and dramatic time of trying to build classrooms where children felt safe to learn. My prayers are with you all.

  2. I still don’t see why you are insisting on making these issues about race, Ben.

In racially homogeneous Japan I see many of the same issues in education.

There are issues of privilege in the classroom wherever you go in the world. I think it is reductive to say they are primarily or even largely about race.

I think socio-economic class is a bigger factor, it’s just that in the USA you seem to have a large overlap between racial demographics and class. If you want to talk about inclusive education, though, surely it should be framed in a more universal way, though, rather than taking on the American Imperialist tone that these discussions usually take on. Assuming that the American context is somehow universal to the rest of the world.

    1. I believe you are 100% correct Shem. The PRIMARY deciding factor in a student’s future success or failure rests not with skin color, gender, etc…not even close. It resides in the “privilege” of coming from a two parent household. It is the biggest factor in socioeconomic status. I say privilege because, it is becoming less common now. For example, in the black community in 1960, 80% of children came from two parent households. Now, that figure is 20%!! Father’s are leaving the home in the black community (and really in the U.S. at large). It is the true “pandemic” of our time. Sadly there are too many distractions, like racism, white privilege, and others that cloud that fact out.
It is far too narrow to blame Trump for representing everything that is wrong about our society. Our country was based on the right foundations (see opening lines of DOI) We need to live that out. It takes work, and it STARTS with maintaining an intact family unit.
On one major front I agree, Ben, that creating a sense of community in the classroom models what a quality intact home life ought to be like, with everyone as a positive contributor, leaving no student in the dust. That is the best we can do. That will, as you say, pay off big dividends in the future.

Whatever our individual politics, I think we can all agree with this. It is a statement that is both true and context neutral.

It applies to me teaching at a racially homogeneous selective boys school in Japan. It applies to someone teaching in a poor school in Chicago with diverse ethnic minorities. It applies to someone teaching aboriginal children in outback Australia.

Let’s unite behind that as a message and leave divisive politics for divisive politicians.
